Dog, the most trusted man’s friend is a carnivore and his diet must be predominantly meat. Sometimes dogs received cooked foods, what ‘stayed lunch’, but today dogs are, in most cases, dry, dehydrated foods.
The food we eat, even if it is very meaty, does not fit completely with dogs. By administering dry foods, the dog can increase the lifespan and ensure a balanced diet that its stomach will tolerate well. Many types of dogs have sensitive stomachs and cannot get food from the table, for example, retrievers and Labradors.
When we have a pet we want to make sure our friend is getting all the necessary nutritive value from his food, but also enjoys the taste of his food. Dogs can eat a lot of things and they are quite easy to maintain when it comes to food.
Some might be more difficult than others, but they are easily trained and too difficult to maintain when it comes to their diet.
In today’s text we are going to talk about pepperoni and whether this delicious food is healthy for your furry friend or not.
Pepperoni – What is it and Nutritive information?
Exactly 20 years ago, in 1989, with sausages, beer and wine, the borders of the west and east of Europe were opened. The Berlin Wall fell. The Germans remained faithful to their tradition and celebrated everything with their famous sausages.
However, not only the Germans but other nations recognize the benefits of sausages. Various types of sausages and cured meat products are practical meals, whether entertainment, in which we want to serve something simple, solemn evenings, where they form an indispensable part of a cold area or gazebo, or a lunch, where a businessman, in the absence of time, will reach for food that will provide him with energy during the day .
Sour, hot, crispy, juicy, scented, peeled, boiled and simply brilliant. They are all sausages from which water often flows from our mouths while they burn on hot oil and yellow, and they invite us to welcome us to their charms. However, if we return to reality, sausage is a traditional name for the processing of minced meat with the addition of spices that is placed in a thin natural animal or synthetic intestine.
In the past, when there were no refrigerators and freezers sausages would preserve the quality and health safety of the meat, people have come to a unique way of preserving – sausages have been started. It is believed that they were originally created by the Sumerians, who lived in the territory of today’s Iraq about 3000 years before Christ, and they gained considerable popularity during ancient Greece and Rome. By improving the technological process of sausage production, they have become a valued product both with taste and quality.
Throughout history, in many countries and cities, sausages are characteristic of a specific region depending on the availability of ingredients and the climate. Permanent sausages were “born” by the discovery of new spices that helped not only to intensify the taste, but also to preserve the meat. Due to the warm climate, permanent sausages are the most imported in southern Europe.
Pepperoni is a sausage prepared from various sorts of meat and grinded hot peppers that are very spicy. This gives the sausage or salami a specific taste and many people enjoy it because of the spiciness from the peppers. Pepperoni is a popular addition on pizzas, but we can also find it as an addition in sandwiches and various other dishes. It can also be eaten alone, for breakfast for example. Pepperoni is made from grinded meat, but because of the additional spices added afterwards, this spicy salami is specific and isn’t very suitable for dogs.
Can dogs eat pepperoni?
Whether you give your dog salami made from spicy peppers or you would like to give him the pepper itself, this is definitely not a good idea. Dogs are carnivores and their diets should prevalently consist from meat and no other things. Even though adding vegetables to your dog’s food is healthy sometimes, not all vegetables are safe for him. Some vegetables, like pepperoni, can cause extreme digestive problems for your furry friend and even stomach pain. This can also occur in humans, especially in those who have a sensitive stomach.
Pepperoni as a salami made from meat might seem like a tasty snack for your dog, but even if he likes eating it, this doesn’t mean it is safe for him. Dogs love nibbling on the food we eat, but their stomach can’t always process this food. Problems usually occur later when the damage is already done. The biggest problem with pepperoni is that this salami contains a lot of salt and other spices, and we all know this is not healthy for the dog. Even though there is meat in the pepperoni, the amount of salt and other spices can be dangerous for your dog especially in larger amounts.
Like we already mentioned, pepperoni can have a lot of spices inside of it which makes it dangerous for dogs. Spices are definitely not good and salt is the biggest enemy for any dog. Too much salt can lead to problems with heart, bad digestion, blood pressure and many other problems that appear later on and not instantly. Besides these long-term side-effects, problems like bad digestion, stomach pain and diarrhea can appear instantly if your dog ate too much peperoni and the spices caused his sensitive stomach to react. Some dogs have a very sensitive stomach, which can be a problem especially if you give him something spicy and hot to eat.
Fat is another reason why you should avoid giving pepperoni to your dog. Salami is full of fat and even giving small amounts for a longer period of time can cause weight gain for your dog. This is why you should avoid giving him pepperoni too often, or even better, avoid giving him pepperoni at all. This spicy and fattening food can cause various problems for your furry friend, so it is best to find some other food to give him that is going to be a much healthier option.
Some tips on dog’s diet
The need for water depends on hunger and thirst, weather conditions (wet or dry weather, temperature), the activity of the dog, i.e. whether the animal is in a particular physiological condition (skittish, breastfeeding). A certain amount of water a dog receives from food. Raw meat contains about 80% water, and nearly enough home-prepared food. When we feed a dog with dry, factory-prepared food, we need to give him a lot more fluid. After weighing ten kilos we need about 3.5 dcl of water per day. It is interesting that smaller dogs drink relatively few, but this is not yet scientifically proven.
Studies show that the dog is most likely to drink after a meal, especially when grown as an adult; we only eat once a day. Fresh water must always be available. It should be changed at least once a day, and in the summer months and more frequently, because bacteria that cause various diseases, primarily digestive tract, are most easily developed in warm and warm water.
When and how often should you feed your dog?
Theoretically, a dog should only have one meal per day, but in practice the owners often add less. This smaller meal is most commonly boiled with cooked food or a handful of dry briquettes. The main meal is best served in the early afternoon to allow the dog to extract excess liquid (urine) by night, and at night he took the meal and completely cleansed it in the morning. The dog has a strongly developed sense of order and you must, if possible, feed it every day at the same time.
After meals he needs peace. And his wings are resting after lunch. Vacation is especially important for big dogs. Dogs loaded with excess food are at risk of stinging (torsion) of the stomach, which is very dangerous without rapid surgical intervention deadly. Sometimes the torsion can also cause the climbing on the fence. The risk of overturning the stomach is greatly reduced with proper nutrition.
Are spices healthy for your dog?
The dog does not need food according to our taste. Pepper, salt or laurel dog loves, but the dog’s food tends to be weaker the taste. The salt for the body contains precious and important sodium and therefore the food needs to be lightly salted (approximately one-third of human use). The adult dog needs more sodium than the puppy, and the female that needs three times more than her normal physiological state. When a dog has diarrhea or a lot of vomiting, we need to increase the amount of salt a little.
Too much salt, again, badly affects the kidneys. If the dog had eaten the same salty food as man, he would have a severe kidney injury at age six. Sugar can be completely excluded from its diet and we should not have a dog or get used to sweet meals. Sweets, in particular, enjoy its taste.
Cooked or raw food?
First of all, it is thought of as meat, because food containing starch is always cooked. The question is whether to add raw or cooked meat to carbohydrates (rice, pasta, breadcrumbs, bread, etc.)? It is more natural to add raw meat, but when we look physiologically, it does not matter.
The dog from the meat gets protein, and they do not spoil and do not change with cooking. Crude meat may contain dangerous viruses or bacteria, therefore cooking meat is recommended. It is ultimately harmful to feed raw dogs, especially pork liver, because they can be infected with a developmental stage of a dangerous echinococcus, which is harmful to humans. The stories that the dog will become more dangerous eating raw foods are pure fabrications.
